| China, Japan agree to begin joint historical study |
HANOI, Nov 16 (AP) -- The Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers agreed Thursday to conduct a joint historical study of the wartime era and issue results by the end of 2008, a Japanese official said.
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso and his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing, decided in a meeting in Hanoi to set up two teams of 10 historians each to study ancient, wartime and modern history, the official said on condition of anonymity in accordance with policy.
The effort is aimed at resolving deep differences in interpretation of the two neighbors' joint history. China regularly accuses Japan of whitewashing atrocities committed during its invasion and occupation of China in the 1930s and '40s.
