| China, U.S. agree to strive for resumption, progress of six-party talks |
BEIJING, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and U.S. top negotiators agreed to work for an early resumption of the six-party talks and to make concerted efforts for the talks' advancement, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said here Tuesday.
Jiang told a routine press conference that Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei met on Monday evening with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, making an in-depth exchange of views on issues related to the six-party talks.
The two sides agreed to make joint efforts for the restart and further progress of the talks, said Jiang.
Jiang said, in response to reporters' questions, the exact date of resumption has yet to be decided.
"We are still negotiating the date with parties concerned," said the spokeswoman.
According to a spokesperson of the U.S. embassy in Beijing, before leaving here Tuesday, Hill said he believed the talks would probably be resumed in mid-December .
"I believe we will have six-party talks, probably in the middle of December, but what is important for us is that they be well planned," Hill was quoted by the anonymous spokesperson as saying.
The six-party talks, involving China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan, aims at finding a solution to the Korean peninsula nuclear issue.
However, the talks have been stalled since last year as the DPRK refused to return to the talks because of U.S. sanctions against it.
The DPRK said on November 1 that it had decided to return to the six-party talks, but did not offer a specific date.
