Taiwan's China Airlines says profit fell 76% in Jan.-Sept.
TAIPEI, Oct 31 (AP) -- China Airlines Ltd., Taiwan's largest carrier, said Tuesday its net profit for the January-September period fell 76 percent from the same period a year earlier.

The company's net profit for the nine months totaled 245 million New Taiwan dollars (US$7.34 million; €5.78 million), compared to NT$1.01 billion for the same period last year, the airline said in a filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

Revenue in the nine months ended September rose 12 percent to NT$88.85 billion (US$2.66 billion; €2.09 billion) from NT$79.02 billion for the same period last year.

The company didn't report quarterly results or give reasons for the profit decline. Company officials weren't immediately available for comment.

But based on the airline's previously reported first-half results, its third quarter net profit was NT$117 million.

That is 63 percent lower than a net profit of NT$312.5 million in the third quarter of 2005, but a reversal of a NT$257.1 million net loss in the second quarter of this year.

Analysts said they expected Taiwan's airlines to reverse their second-quarter losses on peak-season travel and easing oil prices.
