| China's mainland comes to aid of banana-laden Taiwan farmers |
BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 5,800 boxes of Taiwan bananas will arrive in Shanghai on Sunday, to be followed by more shipments to alleviate the plight of Taiwan farmers.
Taiwan, which has a limited local market, is facing a serious oversupply of bananas due to a bumper harvest this year.
Learning about the situation at a cross-Strait trade fair in Xiamen, a senior mainland official announced on Oct. 19 the mainland would immediately purchase bananas from Taiwan.
On Oct. 21, Beijing Fruit Company, Shanghai Fruit Company and an agricultural company in Fujian signed an agreement with Taiwan Farmers Association and a Taiwan fruit sale company to purchase 300 tons of bananas from Taiwan as a first step.
Taiwan farmers expressed their thanks at the fair, saying it has solved an "an extremely urgent situation" for them.
"The first 75 tonnes of bananas will be sold in supermarkets and fruit shops in Shanghai," said an official with Shanghai Fruit Company.
In June, the Fujian agricultural company bought 200 tons of Taiwan bananas to alleviate market oversupply. The move won it thanks from Taiwan farmers.
