| Shanghai poses drastic surge in foreign trade |
SHANGHAI, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai, one of China's leading metropolises, made a foreign trade totaling 312.7 billion U.S. dollars in the first three quarters this year, up 22 percent year on year.
According to the Shanghai Customs, the city exported 194.16 billion U.S. dollars in the January-September period, a rise of 24.8 percent year on year; the city did an import of 118.57 billion dollars, up 17.7 percent over last year's same period.
European Union (EU), the United States and Japan ranked the top three trade partners of Shanghai. Shanghai's trade volume with the EU surged by 20.8 percent year on year to reached 62.5 billion U.S. dollars in the first three quarters; the Shanghai-United States trade volume topped 59.96 billion dollars, up 27.8 percent year on year; and the city's trade volume with Japan edged up by 14.8 percent year on year to top 47.73 billion dollars.
The ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) was the fourth largest trade partner of Shanghai, with bilateral trade volume reaching 30.8 billion dollars, a rise of 21.7 percent year on year.
Foreign-funded businesses registered a trade volume of 199.51 billion dollars in the first three quarters this year, accounting for 63.8 percent of Shanghai's total trade volume for the period.
