China a Responsible Stakeholder on World Issues
Former German President Richard Von Weizsacker said on Monday that China has become a responsible stakeholder on global issues.

"China has made great efforts to promote world peace and is a responsible stakeholder in addressing global issues, " Weizsacker told an audience of about 150 researchers and scholars on strategic issues.

During his hour-long speech, titled "European Union and China-Common Interests and Responsibility in the Globalized World", Weizsacker said China's stance on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons is decisive and has helped protect East Asia from an arms race.

Eighty-six-year-old Weizsacker, who served as German president from 1984 to 1994, said the European Union (EU) and China are now confronted with common challenges and responsibilities in the globalization.

The EU and China can work closely not only on economy and trade, but also on international issues, including the world trade organization talks and the reform of the United Nations, he said.

Weizsacker was invited to Beijing by China Institute of Strategic Studies, a think-tank on international issues. A senior Chinese legislator and a political advisor are scheduled to meet Weizsacker Monday afternoon.
