| Tokyo stocks close 2% lower |
TOKYO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed more than 2 percent lower Friday.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 287.92 points, or 2.06 percent, from Thursday to 13,655.34. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 31.19 points, or 2.27 percent, to 1,341.76.
On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,402 to 236, with 82 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section rose to 2,006.29 million shares from Thursday's 1,875.35 million shares.
Volume leader Nippon Steel declined 2 yen, or 0.33 percent, to 608 yen.
The TSE's Second Section index lost 19.89 points, or 0.68 percent, to 2,920.23 on a volume of 50.34 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term June Nikkei 225index futures contract fell 290 points to 13,660.
