| Official says no chance of land privatization |
SHANGHAI, Jan. 30 -- The Chinese government has ruled out the possibility of land privatization, Chen Xiwen, director of the office of the central leading group on rural work, said today at a press conference.
Chen said land ownership is determined by China's constitution rather than a central government policy.
He said the government will continue land use reforms to control the illegal sale of farm land and to protect farmers' interests.
China is facing problems in handling the issue of rural land rights. Without secure land rights, farmers are increasingly being evicted from their land to make way for the construction of roads, factories and residential areas.
The government issued a notice last year to raise the threshold of farm land used for urban construction purposes.
The move also banned illegally renting farm land for non-agricultural uses like urban construction.
