SHANGHAI, Jan 25 -- A CHINESE bank clerk who reportedly stole more than 1 billion yuan (US$129 million) and fled to Canada is now under Canadian police's control, Chongqing Morning Post reported today.
Gao Shan, once a sub-branch senior clerk of Bank of China in Harbin, disappeared with 1 billion yuan in January 2005. The stolen money mainly belonged to Shanghai-listed Northeast Expressway Co and a Harbin-based investment company.
Gao reportedly snagged the funds by falsifying deposit certificates.
Media reports said Gao fled to Canada with his accomplice Li Yuanzhe.
Canadian police officials have both suspects in custody.
China's Ministry of Public Security has issued Canadian police a name list of fugitives to repatriate, which included Gao, the newspaper said.
