| Police fire on drug traffickers in SW China, seize 11 kg of ice |
KUNMING, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Police exchanged fire with three drug traffickers on the border in southwest China's Yunnan province and seized 11 kg of "ice", local authorities revealed Friday.
After being tipped off that a group of drug traffickers would cross the border on the evening of Jan. 16, frontier police from Simao city lay in wait for them near the border.
Three armed drug traffickers entered the ambush area at 2:50 a.m., Jan. 17 and fired shots when they came into contact with police. The police fought back. Forced to abandon the drugs, the traffickers fled.
No casualties were reported among the police.
Police seized a total of 3,078 kilograms of drugs and arrested 3,764 suspects in the province last year, according to frontier police authorities.
Yunnan frontier police cracked 3,793 drug trafficking cases in 2006, seizing 1,429 kg of heroin, 763 kg of methamphetamine, or "ice", and 866 kg of opium.
