Shanghai Pudong airport ranks world's sixth in freight handling volume
SHANGHAI, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Pudong International Airport handled 2.16 million tons of freight in 2006, ranking the world's sixth, according to the latest rankings issued by the Airports Council International (ACI).

The leading five airports are Memphis Airport of the United States, Hong Kong International Airport, Anchorage Airport of the United States, Incheon International Airport of the Republic of Korea and Japan Narita International Airport.

Pudong airport, which was eighth on last year's list, saw a rapid increase of freight flights in 2006, up 22.3 percent on the previous year. The airport handled 35,587 freight flights, accounting for 15.3 percent of the total flights handled in 2006. And 85.1 percent of the freight flights were for overseas.

An official with the Shanghai Airport Group said that Pudong airport had accelerated its expansion project since 2005 by adding ten more freight storage units.

The airport is now building another freight area which will become one of the four logistics parks in Shanghai, and the public goods store station is expected to completed by the end of this year.
