| UAE telecom company to bid for stake in Kuwaiti mobile firm |
ABU DHABI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Etisalat, the biggest telecom company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), may join a bidding contest for a stake in Kuwait's third mobile operator, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported on Friday.
The Kuwaiti government has invited companies to express an interest in bidding for a 26 percent stake in the operator by a Sep. 7 deadline.
"We are very interested in bidding," the company's general manager of international business Jamal Al Jarwan was quoted as saying.
It was reported that Oman Telecommunications Co., National Bankof Kuwait, Kuwait Finance House, Kuwait's Global Investment House, Bahrain Telecommunications Co. and Commercial Bank of Kuwait may also join the bidding contest.
Etisalat announced earlier this month that it would bid for Qatar's new mobile and fixed line licenses.
As the third largest Arab telecom provider by market value, Etisalat now manages 14 service providers in the Middle East, Asiaand Africa. Its services currently reach more than 32 million subscribers.
