Vietnam's biggest banking conference focuses on integration, ICT
HANOI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- An international banking conference, the largest of its kind in Vietnam, opened here Thursday, centering on information and communication technology (ICT) application in the country's banking sector and its international integration.

Banking Vietnam 2007 should focus on principal issues, namely "minimizing cash payment and modernizing payment systems, expanding convenient services, ensuring security and preventing risks in banking activities, and harmonizing relations between banking operations and stock market," Le Duc Thuy, governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, said at the two-day conference.

The conference is a forum for foreign and local managers, scientists, experts and entrepreneurs in charge of banking, finance and ICT to exchange experiences in the application and development of ICT to serve both national and banking industrialization and modernization, he said.

Vietnam needs an effective and secured banking system with services coverage expanded to more enterprises and residents, so it should have sound and modern ICT development to support the system, Noritaka Akamatsu, lead financial economist of the World Bank, said at the conference co-organized by the Informatics Technology Department under the State Bank of Vietnam and the International Data Group.

At the conference with the theme "Modern Vietnam Banking System and International Economic Integration", delegates, including those from Vietnamese government agencies, the World Bank and big financial institutions and information technology firms, are to center their presentations and discussions on four major fields: non-cash payment, e-banking service in integration process, banking security and safety, and monetary market modernization.
