| U.S. forces in Afghanistan to use Afghan currency |
KABUL, July 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan would transact all businesses in the Afghan currency afghani instead of U.S. dollar to stabilize the Afghan currency, a local newspaper reported Sunday.
Afghanistan's central bank and the U.S.-led coalition forces signed an agreement on the issue on Saturday, Outlook said.
Noorullah Dilawari, head of Afghanistan's central bank, said every month an amount of 40 million U.S. dollars was first flowing to Afghan businessmen, then to the central bank, from the U.S. forces' budget.
The U.S. dollars would now be transferred into afghanis first through the central bank and would be paid in local currency to the U.S. troops, he said.
The method would help the central bank better control the amount of U.S. dollars on the market, he indicated.
Coalition forces and NATO troops serving in Afghanistan previously were transacting their businesses in U.S. dollars and Euros respectively.
